South Brisbane Cemetery brought back to life by volunteers
Armed with scrubbing brushes and spray bottles, volunteers are sacrificing their Sunday morning sleep-in for an unusual task: giving a 149-year-old cemetery a facelift.
"On a lot of the graves it's got 'gone but not forgotten' on the headstone, and that's what we want to do — we want to make sure they're not forgotten about," historian Tracey Olivieri said.
Levi Jesse Cartledge said he had been intrigued to learn more about the cemetery.
"I thought it would be nicer than going for a walk or playing video games," he said.
"I don't think I'll miss the opportunity to do this again."
Volunteers hope to restore as many graves as they can before the cemetery turns 150 next year.
