From Brisbane to Chennai and back home: Jhye Richardson’s long road back
It’s been a long road back for the rookie, one that has taken him from Brisbane for Australia’s World Cup camp, to the Northern Territory for a return to action, to hot and humid Chennai in the south of India, and finally back home.
Unable to recover in time to join Australia in England, the youngster spent part of his off-season training under Chris Rogers with the National Performance Squad and MRF Pace Academy director/Australia’s greatest ever fast-bowling wicket-taker Glenn McGrath in India.
As fast bowlers go, Richardson and McGrath are as far opposite as they come. McGrath was 196cm tall and while he was quick enough in his heyday his main weapons were unerring accuracy and an immaculate seam. Richardson is 178cm and quick as a whippet, with the movement he gets in the air making him as dangerous they come.
