October 9: Australia win World Cup; Brigginshaw gets top job
On this day, Australia win the World Cup and Manly members vote to merge with North Sydney.
1948 The first Test between Australia and Great Britain at Headingley is one for the true believers. Twelve tries are scored in the Test, won 23-21 by the home side. Historian Robert Gate describes the Test as "an extravaganza of entertainment, a game which broke the mould as far as Test football was concerned."
