Tom Slingsby recalls the $1.5M SailGP slip-up that almost cost Team Australia
Team Australia captain Tom Slingsby has revealed malfunctioning racing software almost cost his crew the inaugural SailGP title in 2019.
Slingsby's crew overcame an error at the start of the final championship race to pass Team Japan approaching the penultimate mark on the Rade Nord racecourse in a thrilling climax that decided which crew would pocket $1.5 million.
The crew had steered their foiling F50 catamaran into the starting box a few seconds early, drawing a penalty and forcing them to start just behind Japan and their captain, Australian Nathan Outteridge.
